Organ Concert Budapest
March 15, 8:00 pm - 9:10 pm
Music is the wine that fills the cup of silence – The phrase is especially true for the organ concerts in the St. Stephen’s Basilica. The holy building is a place where people do not speak aloud, pray in silence or come to admire the beauty of the halls from inside. On Thursday the silent sanctuary gives home to the classic melodies.
The neo-classical St. Stephen’s Basilica is the most remarkable church of Hungary, one of the most significant of tourist attractions, and also the third highest building in the whole country. The program of the concert in this amazing building was adapted by Miklos Teleki who is among the best organ artists in Hungary. The arias of the program are performed by Kolos Kováts, one of the most famous concert and oratorio singers in Hungary. Among numerous prizes, in 1992 he also received the highest prize a Hungarian artist may aquire: the Kossuth Prize. The flute is played by Eleonóra Krusic who is already known for her performances with different orchestras from Barcelona, Zürich, Graz and Vienna.
Did You Know?
For the actual construction of the Basilica the great flood of 1838, provided reason. The center of today’s St. Stephen’s Square was a small natural emersion on the flat Pest area where hundreds of people were able to take refuge from the surging water, until they were rescued by boats. Flood survivors supported the idea of a large church’s construction with donations, as thanksgiving for their miraculous escape. To the construction of the church, the donation collection was launched in the 1810’s, but the works started only on 14 August 1851, according to the plans of Joseph Hild, citizen of Pest and architect of the cathedral of Esztergom and Eger.
Be prepared to be amazed! The heavenly atmosphere of the basilica and the magnificent works of art performed on organ and flute, accompanied by beautiful arias ensure an unforgettable experience.
The concerts are 70 minutes long, without intermission. Each concert begins at 20:00.
